Best Sleeping Pill?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

What’s the best sleeping pill that you can buy? Before I get into this you should know that sleeping pills are not some magic potion, which you can use everyday for the rest of your life. Sure, you can use it as often as you want, but sooner or later, with any type of sleeping pill, you are going to develop a tolerance to it, be dependent on it, feel drowsy the next day, and/or have other side effects if you use it long enough. As such, there really is no “best sleeping pill” out there. Yes, those sleeping pill commercials look very appealing with their imagery and music, but we need to realize that the side effects mentioned in the same commercial are not things to ignore or glance over at. Let’s take a look at the Lunesta commercial.

Lunesta

In it they say that “most sleep medicines carry some risk of dependency” and “side effects may include unpleasant taste, headache, drowsiness, and dizziness”. Of course, when you’re watching this Lunesta commercial you are probably thinking that this is the best sleeping pill to take. Ignore the imagery, pretty actor, and smiles. Lunesta will help, but it should not be your long term solution. There are long-term ways to help you fall asleep, which you have to explore.

All of the side effects of Lunesta are common side effects of all sleeping pills. Here are the top sleeping pill types:

Best over the counter sleeping pill?

Because everyone’s body is different, what may work well for one may not work well for another. Side effects vary from person to person as well. So, although there may be no best OTC sleeping pill, here are some options…

OTC sleeping drugs include antihistamines of which there are four types (Diphenhydramine, Doxylamine, Hydroxyzine, and Promethazine). Diphenhydramine, for example, includes the brand names Nytol and Unisom. Doxylamine, for example, includes the brand names Somnil, Donormyl, Unisom-2, and Dozile. Medications containing Doxylamine have been found to be extremely effective in helping people get to sleep faster.

What is the best sleeping pill in terms of prescription strength drug?

Again, like OTC sleep drugs, there is no simple answer. What works for one may not work for another. When your doctor prescribes you a drug he or she is more concerned about what active ingredients are in it. In terms of prescription drugs, there are two chemicals, Benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine. Generally, Benzodiazepine is for sufferers of severe insomnia and non-benzodiazepine is for those who have moderate insomnia. Brand names for benzodiazepine include Restoril, Halcion, and ProSom. Brand names for non-benzodiazepine sedative hypnotics include Ambien and Lunesta. Regardless of which brand or type of prescription sleeping pill you take, there is no “best sleeping pill”.
